How boat loans work
Most boat loans are secured marine loans, where the boat (and often its motor and trailer) secures the loan. Lenders look at the boat's age, value and type, as well as your income and credit history. The term available depends on the lender and the boat.
Older boats, high-value vessels and private sales all have extra steps, such as a valuation, a survey or a check that the seller owns the boat outright. We'll tell you up front what the lender is likely to need so there are no surprises close to settlement.

Ways to structure it
Which option suits depends on how you'll use the asset, your income and your plans. We'll walk you through the pros and cons.
Secured boat loan
The most common option for personal use. The boat secures the loan.
Unsecured personal loan
Can suit smaller amounts or older boats that lenders won't take as security. Usually a higher rate.
Chattel mortgage
For boats used in a business, such as charter or commercial fishing.
Pre-approval
Know your budget before boat shows and private inspections. Conditional on the lender assessing the boat.

Frequently asked questions
Can you finance an older boat?
Sometimes. Lenders set their own limits on a boat's age. If a secured loan isn't possible we can look at other options.
Do I need a survey or valuation?
For larger or older vessels the lender may ask for a marine survey or valuation. For most trailer boats it isn't needed. We'll tell you early.
Can the motor and trailer be included?
Yes, in most cases the boat, motor and trailer are financed together as one package.
Can I finance a boat for my business?
Yes. Commercial and charter vessels can be financed under a business structure such as a chattel mortgage. Speak to your accountant about the tax side.
