How equipment finance works

Equipment finance lets your business use an asset now and pay for it over time, so working capital stays free for wages, stock and growth. The equipment usually secures the loan.

The main structures are a chattel mortgage, a finance lease and commercial hire purchase. They differ in who owns the asset during the term and how GST and tax are handled, so it's worth checking with your accountant. We'll set out the options side by side.

Loan options

Ways to structure it

Which option suits depends on how you'll use the asset, your income and your plans. We'll walk you through the pros and cons.

Chattel mortgage

Your business owns the equipment from the start and the lender takes security over it.

Finance lease

The lender owns the equipment and leases it to you, with a residual at the end.

Commercial hire purchase

The lender owns the equipment until the final payment, then ownership passes to you.

Low-doc equipment finance

For some established ABN holders who may not have up-to-date financials. Lender criteria apply.
