How car finance works
A car loan is usually a secured loan: the car itself is the security, which is why secured car loans often cost less than unsecured personal loans. You repay over a fixed term set by the lender , and you can often choose weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayments.
If you're buying for a business, a chattel mortgage or other commercial loan may suit better. Your accountant can tell you how each option is treated for tax. We'll explain the structures and help you compare the total cost, not just the headline rate.

Ways to structure it
Which option suits depends on how you'll use the asset, your income and your plans. We'll walk you through the pros and cons.
Secured consumer car loan
For personal use. The vehicle secures the loan, which usually means a lower rate than an unsecured loan.
Chattel mortgage
For business use. The business owns the vehicle from day one and the lender takes security over it.
Novated lease
A salary-packaging arrangement through your employer. Ask us whether it suits your situation.
Low-doc car loan
For some self-employed borrowers who may not have up-to-date financials. Lender criteria apply.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a car loan for a private sale?
Yes. Many lenders finance private sales. They usually need the seller's details, the registration and a check that there's no money owing on the car before settlement.
What is a balloon payment?
A balloon (or residual) is a lump sum left owing at the end of the loan. It lowers your regular repayments but means a larger final payment, and more interest over the life of the loan. Our repayment calculator lets you see the difference using your own figures.
Will getting a quote affect my credit score?
No. A quote enquiry with us doesn't involve a credit check. A credit enquiry only happens when you decide to apply, and we'll ask your permission first.
Can I get pre-approval before I find a car?
Often, yes. Pre-approval lets you shop with a budget in mind. It is conditional and the lender will still assess the specific car before settlement.
